I’ve ‘stolen’ Clarkson’s story on the Lamborghini Huracan Performante. At least I’ve copied it and give due credit to his enormousness for the words and the picture. Clarkson writes no other motoring journalist that I’ve read in recent years. He’s humorous, factual and calls a pig a pig, even though it might have red lipstick applied. With this green monster, he tells it like it is. Get in, no intention of understanding where ‘stuff’ is and just driving it. Me, at least, I have a general understanding where the indicators are, where the headlights should be and that the mirrors are adjusted. All the other stuff you can learn as you go along.
The funniest part of the article is Clarkson pontificating on the exhaust noise – isn’t that what the Lamboghini Huracan Performante is all about mate?
“Well, I’ve never heard a noise like it. Plainly, the engine was bereft of oil after all and had exploded. In a panic, I abandoned the overtaking and took my foot off the accelerator. And then I realised that, no, that’s just the noise a Huracan makes when you poke it with a stick. The sound starts off as a jackhammer, then builds into IEDs going off, Krakatoa, the Grateful Dead, a space shuttle rocket test, white noise, a latter-day V10 Formula One car at full chat, a squadron of F-15 Eagles on combat power, some lions, a hunt ball and a war. All going on in your car. At the same time”
