Five Star Reviews – What are they smoking?
Hi, Bob Aldons from Car Business with a lighthearted look at 5 Star Reviews. So everywhere you look you’ll see people or companies promoting 5-star reviews. Google do it with their customer ratings, ANCAP and other international companies do it for safety ratings on cars, but this time, I’m talking about restaurant reviewers.
John Lethlean (strange surname for a foodie) reviews for the Weekend Australian Magazine and his article on Higher Ground in Melbourne caught my eye. I’m not picking on John particularly, but restaurant reviewers and other similar ratings in general.
Look at the picture. Summary -Keep on Trying – and then count the stars – err, maps of Australia. I don’t like 5 of anything. 3 and a half maps equals 70%. 70 percent is pretty average isn’t it? Yet the comments by Lethlean without the maps encourages us to return, revisit not revile. His words – “All day long people stream through the doors of Higher Ground at the crappier end of the city’s traditional CBD seeking caffeine comfort …..they all mutter ‘wow’ as they arrive because it’s that kind of space”
So what does he really think?
“But who really cares? I’ll go back and you should too. When you’re not quite sure what you want, it’s very satisfying to find a stylish relaxed place that probably does”
So, is there a better way? In my opinion, these type of reviews should be expanded to 100 points. It will undoubtedly provide a broader opinion for restaurant reviewers and car safety reviews. In the car business, it seems that every car gets a five-star rating nowadays. But are 5 stars really 5 stars or is there a broad range of points within that 5-star rating. If a car company achieves say 30 points out of 40, their car falls within that five-star rating band. Another achieves 37 points but also gets that 5-star rating. Perhaps it’s time for a change where various categories within the rating band will provide better information for the consumer than just 5 stars.
I think the wine industry gets it better than most others. If I’m looking at a set of reviews by James Halliday, I’m confident that his points rating system will give me a good guide to the quality of the wine. James is an accredited wine reviewer and if he says that a particular wine is a 99 pointer, I think it’s fair to say that it is. That same 99 pointer (current Penfolds Grange Vintage) would achieve a 5-star rating wouldn’t it? Or perhaps it wouldn’t. 99 isn’t 100 so perhaps in the world of restaurants and cars, it would only get a 4 star rating.
Nonetheless, I hope that this article is food (no pun intended) for thought. it’s just too hard to rate perfection or a lack of it with a 5 point rating system.

I’ve been in the car industry since 1978 – covering all aspects that consumers need advice on. I’ve been called a lot of things in my time – The Car Professor, The Car Doctor, and recently the Car Guy, but the bottom line is that I know a lot about this industry. Whenever someone needs some advice – they call me.
In general terms my car advice is free – it’s just something I like to do and my goal is to give back to the community that has treated me so well.
Good quality, Guaranteed Used Cars
I have access to good quality cars – you can see my current stock by clicking through to Cars Guide. I’m also able to search out that particular car that you’re finding difficult to find. I’ve got a great dealer community that I’ve dealt with for many years and these cars don’t even hit the websites. I specialize in South East Queensland but in some cases, can look after interstate customers
Other areas that I specialize in are fairly widespread.
