Carsales Prices on the Rise – Car Business on the Job
Hi there, Bob Aldons from Car Business on the job for you today. Or perhaps not – rather I’m on my soapbox about a letter I’ve just received from online car behemoth CARSALES. I wrote another blog post recently about my opinion on this company (http://carbusiness.com.au/carsales-customer-profit-exec-remuneration/), and they haven’t let me down.
The letter I received was addressed to me by Chris Politis, the Carsales Dealer Director. In the letter Politis trumpets how well carsales is going and how they’ve helped us (the dealers) to grow our business in 2016. He says that dealers have improved their closing ratio by 3% according to their ‘rubbery’ figures.
And this has resulted in a price increase, arguably wiping out the profit improvement by what they’ve done for the dealer community.

Now, in reality, there are not too many dealers plying their trade in the under $3000 price range, and only the prestige dealers are selling cars for over $75,000. But most dealers work in the $3000 to $74999 market range, and that’s an average increase of around 5%
And why are they increasing their fees? There’s really only a couple of alternatives. One is that they’ve got to pay their shareholder dividends but more so that they’ve got to fund their executive remuneration packages. Certainly won’t be that there’s been any real wage growth in carsales, other than the execs. I’ve often heard from carsales people that they’re underpaid and overworked compared to others in the industry.
So what’s the consequence of all this? Primarily Dealer annual invoices will rise by at least another 5% and they’ll be looking to recover that cost from you, the car buyer.
