38 Years, 8 Months, 3 Weeks and 1 day – Ford Finishes

Hello and welcome to October 7th, 2016. It’s Bob Aldons here with a short story on the rise and fall of Ford Motor Company of Australia. In anyone’s language that headline is a terribly long time. What is it? On February 16th, 1978 I took my first job in the car industry starting as a cadet salesman with Torque Ford, then located at the corner of Anzac Avenue and Oxley Avenue at Redcliffe. What a terrible title – Ford Finishes. But progress has its victims and Australia is poorer for the demise of car manufacturing

22 years is a long time to spend with a single company – from 1978 to 2000, I bled blue for my dealership and the brand. Alan Moffat in his XC Ford Cobra Hardtop winning Bathurst, Dick Johnson and ‘The Rock’. The Ford Laser, built in Sydney alongside the Ford Capri – a monumental car that failed to sell as the Mercury Capri in the USA. Ford Cortina Wagons built by Renault in Sydney. Max Gransden – the father of the “Folcon” – at least that’s the way he pronounced the name.

I was honoured to win a couple of awards at my time with Ford. ‘Diamonds for Cortina” national sales award, First with Better Ideas Award for a sales incentive, a couple of Pacemaker Awards for annual sales and undoubtedly my finest achievement as a Ford Dealer, 6 National Dealer of the Year Awards in the 90’s

I’m sad to see the end of production of Ford vehicles in Australia. Why did it happen? Undoubtedly a combination of exchange rates, cheap Asian labour v Union demands for higher and better working conditions, the demise of the family car to the family SUV and the realization by the parent in the USA that better financial performance wasn’t going to happen in Australia any time soon.

The one saving grace is that research and development will continue in Australia at least for the foreseeable future. Fingers crossed that this R & D stays for a while.
